MEDIA’s Audience Cluster brings together a number of funding opportunities for distributors, festivals, cinemas, video-on-demand platforms and audience outreach initiatives.

Its aim is to connect European audiences with European films by developing and increasing audiences in venues and on a range of platforms and by engaging with younger viewers.

Films on the Move

This scheme supports the distribution of European films across national borders by inciting sales agents and theatrical distributors to invest in bringing non-national films to local audiences.

Upcoming deadline for applications:

in 2022

Pan-European distribution campaigns for the theatrical and/or online distribution of European films.

“Films on the Move” is open exclusively to European sales agents that hold the right to sell a given film in at least 15 countries participating in the MEDIA strand. Applications require a minimum of 7 distributors to be attached to the distribution campaign.

European VOD Networks & Operators

This scheme supports the distribution of European films on individual video-on-demand platforms or via international networks of video-on-demand platforms. It aims to foster international cooperation between VOD operators to strengthen their market position, foster innovation and improve the audience reach of European films.

Upcoming deadline for applications:

in 2022

Joint cross-border initiatives carried out by VOD operators that pursue the objectives of the call through promotion and marketing actions, consumer data analytics, innovative audience reach actions or the exchange of knowledge and best practices.

  • Individual video on demand operators with a significant share of non-national European films in their catalogue able to offer its services in at least 2 eligible countries;
  • Groupings of at least 3 video on demand operators from at least two different eligible countries.

European Film Festivals

This scheme supports networks of European film festivals that screen a significant number of non-national European works.

Upcoming deadline for applications:

in 2022

  • Coordinated and joint activities by European festivals programming a significant proportion of non-national European works and carrying out activities targeted at the general public as well as at industry professionals;
  • Activities by networks to do with strengthening and structuring the network, and activities aimed at making the festivals more sustainable;
  • 50% of the festivals’ programming must be devoted to non-national films and audiovisual works from countries participating to the MEDIA strand;

Audience Development & Film Education

This mechanism supports international initiatives that promote audience development and engagement on European audiovisual works (including heritage film), including through film education activities that focus on young viewers in particular.

Upcoming deadline for applications:

in 2022

Projects with programmes/catalogues consisting of at least 50% European films that reach audiences in at least 5 countries participating in the MEDIA strand and that:

  • Foster international cooperation to gain audience insight, increase audience outreach and impact, and develop innovative projects using digital tools;
  • Consist in the development of film education initiatives in Europe and elsewhere.

The call is open to organisations and entities implementing audience development and film education programmes.

Networks of European Cinemas

This mechanism supports a network bringing together European cinema operators from across Europe that screen a significant proportion of non-national European films. It aims to increase and improve the circulation of European works to audiences across the continent.

A network of European cinema operators screening a significant proportion of non-national European films. ​Special attention is paid to applications presenting adequate strategies to make the industry more sustainable and more respectful of the environment, and that ensure gender balance, inclusion, diversity and representativeness.

The call is open to a legally established network of European independent cinemas that carries out joint activities that promote and screen European films.
